We have previously written on this blog about Doctor Stefan Konasiewicz, a Corpus Christi brain surgeon who was sanctioned by Minnesota's medical board for unprofessional conduct and unethical behavior prior to coming to Texas in 2007. The surgeon had been hit with multiple malpractice suits prior to coming to Texas. Some of those suits involved patient deaths.

According to local news, Dr. Konasiewicz-who currently works at South Texas Brain and Spine Center-went to trial on Tuesday on accusations that he botched a procedure that resulted in severe impairment for Minnesota patient. The patient in that case alleges that the doctor botched a brain biopsy and left him with severe brain injury.

Two of the Minnesota cases against Konasiewicz allege he was responsible for the death of the patient. But according to the Texas Medical Board, there is nothing on record showing investigations or malpractice allegations against Konasiewicz, and he is free and clear to practice in Texas. The doctor currently has privileges at four local hospitals.

The Texas Medical Board said that Konasiewicz had been supervised by a mentoring doctor in Minnesota, but that he is currently not under supervision. According to the Medical Board, doctors are able to make agreements that keep some malpractice cases off public record, but they were unable to confirm whether that is why the Texas Medical Board has no records of malpractice allegations against Konasiewicz.

According to the Texas Medical Board, Konasiewicz's current lawsuit may be included in his public file once it is completed, though the Medical Board said it would still have the power to keep the case off the public record if Konasiewicz submits a petition that they do so.
