The Tracey Law firm is gathering Birth defect cases regarding the recent discovery that Topamax (generic Topiramate) is associated with a twenty times increased risk of Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate. Late last week the FDA changed the pregnancy warning from a category C to a category D, based on data from two pregnancy registries. Other Anti-epileptics like Depakote and Dilantin have long been known to cause birth defects, but Topamax had a lesser warning. Topamax was invented by Johnson and Johnson which was fined millions of dollars in 2008 for "off label" promotion of Topamax. Topamax is only approved for use in the treatment of Seizures related to Epilepsy or for the prevention of migraines. However, it is commonly given for weight loss, fibromyalgia and other non label uses. So far Topamax is only linked to Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate, but other drugs in this category are linked to Clefts, Heart defects, Spina Bifida and Craniosynostosis. Free Case Evaluation
