A new study from the CDC has found that the antidepressant Bupropion AKA Wellbutrin increases a womens risk of having a baby born with heart defects. The researchers found that babies born to women who took Bupropion during their first trimester were at an increased risk of LVOTO defects (left venticle outflow tract obstruction). In particular the study found an increased risk for Coarctation of the Aorta and Hypoplastic left heart which are types of LVOTO defects. GSK who manufactures Bupropion published a study in 2007, which found no increased risk of heart defects in general, however, the CDC authors point out that the earlier study infact supports their own results.
