Patients currently using the Spectrum (model 357000) infusion pump from Sigma International General Medical Apparatus are being asked to seek assistance in returning their devices due to a dangerous product defect. The infusion pumps, used by medical patients in hospitals and homes, regulate the distribution of medicine, nutrients, food and other essential liquids into a patient's system.

The 35700 model of the Spectrum pump was recently found to have a defect that causes it to fail, pumping a potentially deadly amount of medication or other fluids into patients. The failure, so far, seems to occur without provocation and triggers no alarm or warning system in the device.

Sigma International has assured patients that the recall is voluntary and that the company is doing all it can to address the problem quickly and comprehensively. The recall follows on the heels of WalkMed Infusion's Triton Pole Mount infusion pump recall earlier this month.

The failure of these medical devices is yet another example of defective medical products in a year that has seen millions of units of both medication and medical machinery recalled. Patients using the Sigma infusion pump are encouraged to check in immediately with their doctor for either replacement or risk assessment.
