The discovery deadlines in the Chantix case may have been delayed, but the controversial anti-smoking drug will still see its day in court. Even so, according to About Lawsuits, the first lawsuits are unlikely to go to trial before June 2012.

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer is facing a growing number of dangerous drug complaints from people around the country who have used Chantix to combat their nicotine addictions. Among the side effects cited by those involved in the lawsuits are increased aggression and suicidal impulses.

The drug itself is fairly new to the market. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006, it wasn't long before concerns were surfaced regarding Chantix's potential side effects. In some cases, Chantix users have injured themselves and/or others. In a number of instances, the results have been fatal.

Presently, there are close to 100 Chantix lawsuits pending and more are coming in.

In 2009, Pfizer was forced to include a severe warning on all bottles of Chantix regarding the potential for mood disorder and psychological changes. Pfizer was also ordered to perform comprehensive clinical trials to discern the potentially negative effects of Chantix.

For many, these trials are too little too late and it's doubtful they will offer Pfizer much protection from the mounting stack of lawsuits.
