If you are considering decorative contact lenses as part of your costume this Halloween, you may want to think again. Every year, these dangerous products make it onto the shelves at gas stations, convenience stores and other retailers.

And, every year, these cheap accoutrements cause discomfort and injury for a number of Halloween revelers. For one young woman, cited in a piece for WDAM in New York, the purchase of decorative contacts led to a torn cornea and viral infection of the eye.

In some cases, such an injury may lead to permanent loss of vision.

These contact lenses shouldn't even be available in stores. In 2005, the federal government banned the sale of contacts without a prescription. Even so, as WDAM reports, they still show up every year around Halloween.

While prescription lenses may be more expensive, if you really want a certain look, then it's worth the money. Not only will a serious eye injury likely cost more in the end, you could be left with permanent ocular damage.

If you or a loved one is injured using decorative contact lenses, seek medical attention immediately. Remember, the sale of these dangerous products is illegal. For your safety, and the safety of friends or children, it's better to simply stay away from over-the-counter contact lenses.
